A thought

I've been doing martial arts so long I forget that other folks don't have an outlet for their aggression and frustration like I do.

I'm not saying I'm more patient than others, but I seem to be able to keep thinking longer before fight or flight kicks in.

This past weekend I was confronted with a violent situation and that longer fuse prevented violence entirely which was doubly fortunate because the situation was far from what it seemed.

Aw, man. You can't start a story like that and leave me hanging!

We we driving up the Kank just past the hairpin turn and saw a man carrying a protesting woman up the side of the road. He threw her to the ground and started fighting with her.

Or so it seemed.

I stopped the brontomobile, kicked off my footwear, explained I was a blackbelt and demanded an explanation. Within seconds I was flanked by two other blackbelts who had come for the ride with us.

The guy very quickly explained what was going on.

Turns out she was bi-polar and having a manic episode (been on the receiving end so I recognized it).

The woman tried to jump into the brontomobile (it was still running), but at a word, the lovely and quick thinking starfire91 locked the doors.

The woman sprinted off into the woods.

At that point there is ZERO mobile signal, no matter the carrier. After asking the guy how we could help we took off and found a ranger who radioed the authorities.

Of course that was after we had defused the other drivers who had only seen part of the events and were ready to tear the guy apart.

Later that day we ran into someone who happened to pass through there later and they spotted a police car and an ambulance, so things turned out all right.

But it took a good 45 minutes plus some physical exercise to finish flushing the adrenalin out of my system.

If I went with my gut instinct, I would have been mixing it up with the real victim.

It never hurts to ask. Unless you are unprepared for a fist in your face as the answer.

No kidding. I felt horrible for the poor guy. I guess she had jumped out of the moving car several times (and somehow was apparently unharmed).

Yeah, I had to break up a very one sided fist fight between two of our shizophrenic clients when I worked at the group home. The man that was punching the other thought the other guy was possessed by the devil and had to be killed.

When mentally ill people get off their meds, or their meds stop working and they have a relapse, it's amazing how strong and resiliant they can be.

You can take the man out of the bible belt, but you can't belt the devil out of the man?

Exactly. LOL

The guy doing the beating had been raised by his mentally ill mother, who told him when he heard voices it was demons trying to corrupt him.

Combine that with the other client who on any given day wanted to be refered to as "Stalin", "Mussolini", "Hitler"...

On the day he got beat up he was "Satan". And walking around saying "Everyone's dead!" Not good for him.
